Choosing the perfect name for your baby

For many soon-to-be parents, the task of deciding what to name a new baby can be as overwhelming as it is exciting. After all, this is something your child will carry with them for their entire lives, and they don’t get a say in it whatsoever! So, if for whatever reason the whole baby-name game is throwing you a bit right now, we have put together our top tips to help find one that both you and your little one will love forever.

  1. Write down ALL the options – and narrow down from there

Inspiration can come from anywhere – history, family, books, film, (and of course, good old trusty Google). And it’s a good idea to keep a list of every single name that resonates, even if just for a moment or two, so you have lots of options to work with when baby arrives. Say them out loud, by themselves and in full along with middle and last names too. You could even pretend you’re introducing them to someone. “This is my child, (insert name)”. Pay attention to how you feel as you say them. Warm and fuzzy, or just a bit meh? This may help narrow down your list, ideally to a top three to five names. We want options, but not too many, as that can be a nightmare for the indecisive among us!

If you’re the type of person who needs to see a face before putting a name to it, your narrowed down faves will be super helpful when you see your little babe for the first time. Most likely, one will jump out as being perfect for your new addition. But remember, you don’t have to make a final decision the second they are born either. Take your time for a day or two if you need it!

  1. Think of the future

Babies aren’t babies forever – and some names may sound absolutely adorable for a newborn, but a little strange for a fully-fledged adult. So, when testing out potential monikers, try to imagine your new bundle of joy at different ages, from childhood into adulthood, and anticipate whether it will continue to suit them throughout the various stages of their life.

It can also be helpful to look at current trends and decide whether or not it matters to you how popular your baby’s name will be. For some it wouldn’t matter in the slightest if there are six other Charlotte’s in their Charlotte’s grade. While for others, choosing a less common name for their child is extremely important. Also, some names may be only fleetingly popular, so more of a passing trend. It’s important to consider whether you will still love the name ten or even five years from now.

  1. Your baby’s name is no joke

Let’s just put it out there – kids can (sometimes) be cruel, especially in the schoolyard or playground. You might want to think about unkind nicknames that could potentially arise, and even what their full initials would spell, which may cause your child embarrassment once they reach the tender school ages down the line.

  1. Only listen to the opinion of others if you’ve asked for it

If you’re finding it tough to decide on a name, it can be helpful to seek the input of trusted, kind people from your inner circle. These people should be able to listen to and respect your options without resorting to mockery or criticism. If you have a hunch that someone will be critical of a name you are really fond of, you definitely don’t have to share it with them until baby has arrived and your official decision has been made! Don’t let someone else’s judgement make the decision for you – especially if you haven’t asked for it!

  1. Trust your gut

When it comes down to it, the only opinions that really matter are those of the parents. You are the ones who will form a deep love and bond with your children before they even arrive. You are the only ones to know them on some level before they land in your arms. Ultimately, you just need to trust in that and try to enjoy the whole process, because it’s a very special and memorable one indeed.

And once you have chosen a name, you can have some real fun with it!
